Anne-Lot Hoek

Anne-Lot Hoek (PhD) conducts research on colonialism and the struggle for independence in South Africa, Namibia and Indonesia. She regularly publishes in NRC Handelsblad and De Groene Amsterdammer and is on Dutch national Radio 1 and television. Internationally her work appears on outlets like BBC Indonesia, De Lage Landen, Inside Indonesia and she was recently guest in The History Hour at the BBC World Service.
She is the author of The Battle for Bali. Imperialism, Resistance and Independence 1846-1950 (shortlist Libris History Prize 2022), on which she also obtained her doctorate. Hoek received a prize from the University of Amsterdam for her contribution to the public debate on colonial history in Indonesia. She graduated from the same university on the struggle for independence in Namibia.
In 2026 her next book, The Art of Betrayal (De kunst van het verraad), will be published by De Bezige Bij. The Battle for Bali is being translated into Indonesian and English and will be published in Indonesia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. She is also working on a large publication about South Africa and Namibia.​
